indicates he was born on 27 April 1945 and died on April 28, 1945, at City Hospital, in Weston, Lewis County, West Virginia, with cause of death listed as “Premature Birth.” The certificate is signed by George Snyder of Weston, and appears to be dated 11 May 1945.Edward's age at death is listed as one day, and then in the “If less than one day” box, 12 minutes.
His father is recorded as Francis E. Brown of Lewis County; “not known” is in the box for mother’s information, with burial on 30 April 1945, in the Stalnaker Cemetery in Glenville, under the direction of R.L. McGee of Glenville, license no. 219, embalmers no. 436. There is no marking in the “filed” box nor registrar’s signature box.
The death certificate informant is Ruby Shuman of Glenville, West Virginia. Ruby Shuman was married to James Stanley Reaser, and in the 1940 census they are living in Camden Flats, Gilmer County, West Virginia, with a two-year-old son, James Jr. Ruby’s 2017 obituary copied at Find-a-Grave (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/177792402/ruby-vida-reaser) implies she was expecting daughter Connie in December 1945.
Frances E Brown was born in 1918 in Lewis County, West Virginia, as evidenced by the marriage license issued on 30 Mar 1939 in Gilmer County recording his marriage to Dorothy Lucille Beall, daughter of Alvin C Beall and Grace Burnside. On 26 April 1940, the U.S. Federal census report for Freeman’s Creek, Lewis County, page 6 of 22, beginning at line 43, records a household including:
Edward A Brown, age 63, who in 1935 was in rural Gilmer County, WV, no occupation
Artie, wife, age 58
Francis, son, age 21, also previously in rural Gilmer County, a NYA laborer
Dorothy, daughter-in-law, age 18, with same residential history, no occupation
Mary E, granddaughter, age 1/12.
On 16 Oct 1940, Francis Edward Brown, DOB 24 Dec 1918 in Lewis County, registered with Selective Service, with a Vadis, Lewis County, address. His NOK listed is Dorothy Brown; he has no occupation.

On 13 Mar 1948, Francis Edward Brown, age 29, s/o Edward Alexander Brown and Artie Mae Rexroad applied for a marriage license and was married to Revellae (Rellae) Jane Alls, age 19, in Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia.
On 17 April 1950, Dorothy Beall is enumerated in the U.S. Federal census in Glenville, Gilmer County, West Virginia. She is listed as 28 yo, divorced, and mother to Barbara J Smarr, age 2, and Janis Fay Smarr, age 1.
On 29 April 1950, Farrell Smarr, DOB 28 Oct 1916 in Gassaway, Braxton County, was issued a Gilmer County marriage license and married Dorothy Beall, DOB 12 Jul 1922, Glenville, Gilmer County, West Virginia.
On 23 May 1950, Francis and Revellae were enumerated in the 1950 census in Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia. Revellae is listed as 22, and in their household are sons Larry (5), Francis Lee (1) and daughter Arleen, born in January 1950.
Francis Edward Brown died 29 Dec 1983 at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Virginia, of septic shock secondary to lobar pneumonia and multiple lung abscesses.
Dorothy’s 2011 obituary reads:
Dorothy L. Smarr age 89 of Glenville, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord at 1:57 p.m., Monday, July 18, 2011 in United Hospital Center, Bridgeport following an extended illness.
She was born July 12, 1922 in Gilmer County a daughter of the late Alvin and Grace Burnside Beall.
Dorothy was a true homemaker, she loved taking care of her husband, children and especially household duties which she truly enjoyed. She was a former member of the Gilmer County Ladies Aid and she enjoyed entertainment of any kind especially singing. She was a Methodist by faith.
Surviving are six children, Barbara Wine and husband Kenny of Burnsville WV; Janice Wilson and husband Clark of Glenville; Thelma Davisson and husband Danny of Jane Lew WV; Roscoe Smarr and wife Pamela of Clarksburg WV; Shelia Mozingo of Darlington SC and Diana Eubank of Bridgeport WV; 17 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Farrell Smarr whom she married April 29, 1950 and preceded her July 4, 1989; one grandson, David Hall; one brother, James Beall; four sisters, Theda Cross, Mary Riddle, Joann Cropot and Ruby Maynard.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., Glenville at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 23, 2011 with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Hiney Cemetery, Linn. Friends may call 4-8 p.m., Friday at the Mortuary.
